Help us make this fall’s Make a Difference Campaign a success!  After completing 1,000 hours of service, Micah’s Porch will make a great impact on our neighbors and community.  We will provide materials with specific dates and projects with much more detail to follow.  Projects will be available throughout the weeks with opportunities during the day, evening, and weekends plus jobs for folks of all ages.  Currently, we are looking for ideas.

-          Do you work at a non-profit and have to do more (work) with less (people and money)?  What are some of the nitty-gritty tasks that are being neglected?  What’s the one project that we could handle that would make a positive difference?  The office that needs painting, the bathroom that needs scrubbing, the mailing that needs addressing and stamping, the donations that need sorting.  Let us know!

-          Do you already volunteer for an organization that could use extra hands?  Let us know!

-          Are you willing to be a project lead or co-leader?  We’d like one or two folks to lead each project and be responsible for coordinating and communicating with your crew.

Some of the projects we currently have in the works include serving meals for Night Ministry, packing food at Greater Chicago Food Depository, painting a mural, cleaning offices at a food pantry, literacy activities, job-search support, and cleaning our “front yard” and nearby streets.

To make this a success, we will need full participation.  Plus it will be an opportunity to pull in your friends, neighbors and family.

We’ll be gathering right after the service on Sunday morning, August 29.

This weeks movie is American Beauty, a story of suburban life revealed.  What is revealed is a place most of us wouldn’t want to go, and hate to live at.  Welcome to life in Hell, without the brimstone and funny red costumes, but an all too real place for many people’s lives.

Our first movie is the cultural blockbuster Avatar in which many different spiritual and ethical themes emerge.  The themes of ecology, capitalism, mercenaries,war, interconnectedness, incarnation, and the beauty of creation all intertwine (with some pretty nice special effects) in this film.  The result offers us an opportunity to explore the foundations of our faith.
